Asthma Emergencies

When should I go to the doctor?

Call your doctor right away when:

  • You feel faint, dizzy, or weak
  • You have trouble with normal activities such as cooking dinner, cleaning, or taking out the trash
  • You have a cough that won’t go away
  • You wheeze (make a high-pitched sound) when you breathe in or out, especially if you do not usually sound that way
  • Your wheeze gets worse, even after your medicine has had time to work (most quick-relief medicines work within 15 minutes)

When should I call 911 or go to an emergency room (ER)?

Call 911 or go to an ER when:

  • You have shortness of breath or trouble breathing
  • Your symptoms do not get better after you use your quick-relief inhaler
  • You sense tightness in your chest
  • Your lips or fingernails turn blue or gray
